Wild Rose Project

Help us to produce and record a suite of five movements, with music written by Nic Daniel and words from the poem, “Wild Rose” by Burl Battersby.

Wild Rose and Other Poems Sung by the Wi

The poem, an ode to Jane Marie (pictured above with her beloved roses at the bottom left), is a tribute to all Mothers and celebrates the beauty of their life, the legacy they have created, and recognizes the deep sorrow of those who they have left behind with their passing.

Nic, a recovering ex-professional musician, and Burl, a recovering ex-poet, bring their skills together to produce this five movement suite based on the poem, "Wild Rose".

We need the funds in order to be able to finish composing, hire musicians, record, edit, mix, and master the five songs in the suite.

Here is a link to the poem, Wild Rose, for you to experience for yourself. Nic is currently working on a demo of the song which will be available to hear when it is complete, so check back later!

In serving out my life sentence here on earth

I have been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet,

A high school dropout and Valedictorian

A pawn and a King

Music and spirituality have been central to my life

Played from dives to Madison Square Garden

Never convicted of a felony, successful career in respiratory therapy

Surrendered to be alone, met my wife the week after,

and have had the best 20 years Of my life with her.

I feel this project is so important!

To honor and celebrate our Mothers

Please join us for a magical ride.

Burl Battersby

Poetry stirred my soul from an early age and yet I was afraid to admit it. I was certain people would judge me if they found out that I loved Walt Whitman and Ezra Pound. Then I heard Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison and realized their poetry was what made them cool. That’s when I began calling myself a poet.

“Wild Rose” is my ode to my Mom, Jane Marie. All of the imagery comes directly from her life and was written within days of her passing. Speaking in raw emotions, the poem celebrates the love and guiding influence of Moms everywhere. I am excited to be on this path with Nic, creating a beautiful piece of music that will honor and celebrate everyone’s Mothers.

B. Eugene B.s' Artist Statement

Different forms of self are apparent in my art. My visual art is closely tied to my process of writing poetry, and these two forms of expression are considered the same child in my mind; not a closely related phenomenon, but an alternate form of the same creation.
